What is a digital certificate?

Where do I get one?

Authentication for the printer

The authentication protocols(s) you specified require you to provide a digital certificate for the wireless printer. If the text box shows that the certificate is not installed, or if you want to install a different certificate, click on the Configure button. This will take you to the print server's embedded web server; follow the instructions to install the certificate.

The HP Jetdirect print server comes with a locally administered ("self-signed") digital certificate pre-installed. Note that some authentication protocols, such as EAP-TLS, require the print server to have a certificate issued by a trusted thrid-party Certificate Authority.

A digital certificate is an electronic means of proving the identity of a network user or device. Certificates contain detailed information about the user's device in a standard format. They are typically issued by a trusted third-party Certificate Authority (CA). Locally administered, or "self-signed", certificates are valid in some instances. But note that some authentication protocols, such as EAP-TLS require a certificate issued by a trusted third-party CA.
